Many years ago I was far in debt and I felt like there was no way out. I organized all my bills and tried to negotiate some of the debt down. I was losing hope and had no clearity on what I should be doing. I sought council from a few friends who I respected as being financially responsible.
Don Foote was one of those friends. This soft spoken, white haired man founded a local bank and was involved in some other successful business ventures. In my relationship with him, I viewed him as father figure who always said just the right thing. In a meeting together, I explained how I had amassed the debt over several years of making bad decisions. He listened carefully made a few observations and then so eloquently stated… “Mark, you didn’t get into this overnight, and you’re not going to get out of it overnight.”
I eventually paid off all that debt, and I thank Don for the encouragement to pray about developing a steady plan. Those prayers brought clarity and wisdom to a lost boy.
His words have stayed with me now for 20+ years, and I’ve shared them with those who have sought my council. Those words… so true for so many aspects of life.
The words my friend Don Foote said.
