10 checks for flood damaged cars

So you’re looking for a vehicle and you find one you like… the price is in your budget… it’s local… and you want to head out to test drive it… READ THIS LIST FIRST.

1. If the price of the vehicle is below Blue Book – it’s probably too good to be true – walk away.

2. Don’t buy a vehicle in an area that has recently sustained flood damage.

3. Most people are honest, good-willed folks.  Ask if the vehicle has been in a flood.

4. Get a current (like today) CarFax report to confirm the vehicle history.

5. Look at the title BEFORE you buy the vehicle and look for “salvaged flood vehicle” on the title.

6. If buying pre-owned from a dealer, make sure it’s a certified pre-owned vehicle.

7. Look for electrical damage, like lights not working properly.

8. Look closely for gravel, sand or dirt embedded in the carpeting or seats.

9. If the inside smells musty or is overly perfumed with air-freshener… there’s a reason.

10. Look for a water ring on the inside of the trunk or engine compartment.
