My Father’s Words | Part 1

Those of you who knew my father understand that he had a sense of humor that was contagious. He used words or phrases to say things that no one could understand, and caused them to ask questions. This must have been part of the teacher in him.

If he were leaving, instead of saying goodbye, he would say ‘carbolic acid.’ And when someone would give him an look of questions or ask what that meant, he’d reply with ‘carbolic acid… that’s goodbye in anybody’s language. If you know anything about science, this is very powerful acid that destroys everything. He knew that… and wanted you to know as well.

Some of his “George-isms” were just silly plays on words. If you asked him what time it was and it happened to be 2:30, he’d answer with ‘the Chinese dentist time.’ Most folks would wrinkle their eyebrows and say WHAT? And then he’d repeat, ‘the Chinese dentist time… tooth hurty.’ Seeing this in writing, you understand right away… but most folks would require him to repeat it a couple times before they actually got it.

Don’t forget the 30 or so signs he had hanging up in the band room. Low before high. Slow before fast. Short before long. Enter to learn – leave to serve. You are only as good as the weakest link – – – – and many many more.

Wish I’d had a chance to meet your dad. He sounds like my kind of guy. My dad and he had a lot in common. Both musicians, both great sense of humors, and both said things that you had to think about when you heard. I know his son, and if he was anything like him I already know that I’d love him.
